India enforces curfew in Leh following violent rallies
(MENAFN) According to reports, Indian authorities have imposed a curfew in Leh, the capital of the union territory of Ladakh, after violent protests left several people injured and caused property damage. The region shares a border with China.
Ladakh, which was carved out of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, has a predominantly Buddhist population and has long seen calls for greater autonomy. The recent demonstrations, reportedly linked to prominent environmentalist and activist Sonam Wangchuk, are demanding full statehood for Ladakh, similar to India’s 28 other states.
Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since September 10, pressing the federal government to meet demands including statehood for Ladakh.
“On 24th September, at around 11.30 am, a mob instigated by his [Wangchuk’s] provocative speeches left the venue of the hunger strike and attacked a political party office as well as Government office of the CEC [Chief Election Commissioner] Leh,” the Indian Home Ministry stated on Wednesday.
Authorities have deployed security forces to maintain order and enforce the curfew while assessing the situation.
