US Urges India to Look for Russian Oil Alternatives
(MENAFN) US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has urged India to explore alternatives to Russian oil, asserting that the country could purchase crude from any source other than Russia.
Responding to a query about India’s continued acquisition of Russian oil on Wednesday, Wright noted that there are multiple global suppliers New Delhi could rely upon.
“You can buy oil from any nation on earth, just not Russian oil,” Wright stated, emphasizing that India opts for Russian crude due to its lower cost.
“Nobody wants to buy Russian oil; they have to sell it at a discount,” the US official asserted.
“India has decided to make the trade-off to buy cheaper oil and look the other way, which is giving money to a guy who’s murdering thousands of people every week.”
Wright also clarified that the US does not aim to “punish” India, but rather seeks to help bring an end to the Ukraine conflict. He recommended that India could consider sourcing oil from the US instead.
Since 2023, India has become a significant exporter of refined fuels to European markets. Indian private companies acquire Russian crude at discounted rates and then sell the processed fuel products to Europe.
Wright’s remarks follow a series of statements from US officials concerning the punitive actions that former President Donald Trump imposed on India, effective from August 27.
The Trump administration implemented 50% tariffs on most Indian imports, which includes a 25% surcharge specifically targeting India’s purchases of Russian oil and defense-related equipment.
